Seattle, WA -- The recent Nisqually Earthquake has focused attention on seismic hazards here in the Pacific Northwest and rightly so. Seismologists are pretty unanimous in their projections that the long-awaited "Big-One" is "still out there." Worse news is that we're subject to numerous other natural hazards as well: volcanic ash storms and lahars, earthquake-driven tsunamis, wildfire, thunderstorms, flash floods and mudslides. The good news is that a wealth of pre-disaster preparedness and mitigation information is available online at: www.fema.gov.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) web site is updated daily, and includes fresh audio from federal, state, and local officials with the latest on federal disasters, emergency programs, and weather updates. Audio clips are posted from the FEMA Radio Network (FRN) and digital photographs, even fresh video, track major disaster activity nation-wide.
"FRN Online allows us to post real-time disaster updates within minutes of recording the FEMA Radio Network newsfeed," says FEMA Deputy Regional Director Tammy Doherty. "Internet users can access real-time news as it happens, in the original words of disaster officials and program experts."
Additional "electronic" preparedness information is available through FEMA's 24-hour FAX-on-Demand service, at (202) 646-FEMA, and a variety of printed material, including brochures, pamphlets and emergency preparedness checklists is available through local emergency management offices and local chapters of the American Red Cross.
