Titles for business vehicles (corporation codes)

MVC issues titles to businesses located in New Jersey or with vehicles primarily garaged in New Jersey. Your business will receive a 15-digit corporation code (corpcode) that will be required for all transactions.

How to get a title or a corpcode for a business vehicle
  • You must submit an application to an MVC Agency –
a dealership cannot conduct this transaction on your company's behalf
  • Businesses licensed through our Business License Compliance Office will be assigned a corpcode at the time of licensing. You do not need to submit the request to MVC
  • Complete request form BA-8 [109k pdf] signed by the officer of the company or registered agent along with a photocopy of your driver license or acceptable proof of identification
  • Proof of Social Security (or exemption):
  • Your company's tax ID number
  • Additional identification for anyone doing business on behalf of the company, such as a driver license or another acceptable form of identification
  • Power of attorney signed by the same officer or registered agent that signed the corpcode request form. If you aren't a U.S. citizen you must prove your legal presence in the country. The power of attorney must be notarized and typed or printed on your company letterhead with the information fields shown on our suggested format [89k pdf] and signed
  • A letter on official company letterhead containing:
    • Your business name as it appears on the Division of Commercial Recording and/or taxation records
    • Address and a phone number (street address must be supplied if a P.O. Box is used as the mailing address)
    • A description of the type of business
    • An alternative address if the vehicle is kept at a location other than your business
  • A copy of formation documents with proof of filing by the New Jersey Department of State or Treasury
  • If you have an out-of-state company, you need to produce a Certificate of Authority issued by the New Jersey Secretary of State's office or Department of Treasury
  • A tax ID number alone is not sufficient proof that a company is authorized to conduct business in New Jersey. You will need proof that the business is registered with the New Jersey Division of Commercial Recording and/or Taxation (i.e. incorporation papers, a letter from the Treasury, LLC Documents, etc.)
  • You may not mail or fax corpcode requests to an Agency. A request for a corpcode will only be accepted in person

Understanding the approval process
  • Corpcodes will not be assigned the same day you visit an agency. An MVC representative will contact you within five business days to tell you when you can complete the titling and registration.
  • Failure to complete the application or supply additional requested information will delay the review
  • Only the same person will be allowed to complete the paperwork
  • If titling and registration is being handled by the dealership where you purchased your vehicle, you may supply the approved corpcode number directly to them. You will receive your number over the telephone, eliminating the need for a return visit to the Agency
  • Corpcodes will be assigned to the home office or to sites having individual federal tax ID numbers
  • It is your responsibility to insure that the registration renewal applications are properly distributed to individual locations

Address change requests must be submitted on company letterhead within seven days and include:

  • Be sure to include your federal tax ID number and a copy of your company's formation papers that show the filing information by the appropriate government official. A Certification of Authority issued by the New Jersey Department of State or Treasury must also be included
