Things to Do in Atlanta

Atlanta is the capital and most populous city in Georgia, and the ninth most populous metropolitan area in the United States. Atlanta sits in both Fulton County and DeKalb County which is where most of the CDC facilities reside.

As of July 2006, Atlanta had a metropolitan population of 5,138,223. The mayor of Atlanta is Shirley Franklin. Nicknames for Atlanta include “Hotlanta” and “the ATL.”

  • Martin Luther King Historic District,
  • Carter Center
  • Atlanta History Center
  • High Museum of Art
  • Atlanta Botanical Gardens
  • Six Flags
  • Fernbank Museum and Science Center
  • North Georgia Mountains
  • Appalachian Trail

Additionally, for a weekend trip, visit nearby historic Savannah, which is close to the Georgia coast.

Many people have called Atlanta the “City of Trees” and along with the city’s treelined neighborhoods, Atlanta has many parks including: Piedmont, Grant, Lullwater, Centennial, Stone Mountain, and Freedom.

Sports

2008 CLEH Interns at Turner FieldPlenty of professional sports events occur in Atlanta during the summer. Some events include Atlanta Braves baseball, Georgia Force arena football (season runs March-mid June) and the Atlanta Silverbacks soccer (season runs April-September)

Festivals

Atlanta is a city known for its festivals. Summer festivals include the following:

  • Decatur Arts Festival;

  • Virginia Highlands Summerfest ;

  • Pride Festival;

  • Atlanta Jazz Festival;

  • National Black Arts Festival;

There is something going on nearly every weekend!
