Course Title: Basic LINUX Administration for WFOs ad RFCs

Target Audience: ESAs, ETs, and ITOs who install and administer Linux systems as part of their assigned duties in their office.
Overview : This course is designed to support a large variety of field (WFO/RFC) activities which utilize the Linux operating system. There is no single field platform targeted, rather the knowledge and skills acquired are applicable to any number of Linux platforms employed at the site. The version of Linux taught at present is Red Hat version Enterprise 4. The focus of the course is on managing the Linux system and the services it renders. This is NOT a beginning UNIX/LINUX course. This an "ENTRY-LEVEL" Systems Administration course that includes the following topics :
INSTALLATION and BOOTING X WINDOWS (KDE, Gnome) HARDWARE ADMINISTRATION SOFTWARE UPGRADES PROCESS MANAGEMENT USER ADMINISTRATION NETWORK CONNECTIVITY NETWORK SECURITY SHARING FILES (Samba, NFS) SYSTEM MONITORING BACKUP AND RECOVERY
Required Prerequisites: Students are expected to know basic LINUX/UNIX commands before arriving in class, and thus there is a prerequisite listed below. It should be noted however that a student new to Linux/Unix is best set up to succeed in the course if he or she gets some actaul hands-on practice time prior to coming to class instead of relying soley on a single prerequisite course to get comfortable with basic Linux/Unix skills.
A. LINUX Essentials Distance Learning -or- a previous NWSTC course in UNIX/LINUX. Linux Course(s) from a university or public vendor (Red Hat, Sun, etc...) -or- some other correspondance course (such as those found in our NWSTC Lending Library), may be substituted with approval of the instructor. Note: This prerequiste does not assure a student will be successful in the residence course without some additional effort. It is strongly suggested that a student new to UNIX/Linux take the time to practice basic UNIX/Linux skills prior to attending this introductory System Admininstration class. Optional, But Recommended Review: A. DataComms self-study modules (available from the NWSTC web site): - Lan Networks (DC-NTW-1) - TCP/IP Services (DC-TIS-2) Materials: All course materials are provided.

This is a beginning LINUX/UNIX course designed to teach the new user basic Linux commands and concepts. This is an on-line course for NWS employess using NWSTC authored materials. Students will be asked to download and read pdf materials and then go online to an NWSTC server to complete some practical exercises using beginning level Linux commands learned. There are no prerequisites for this course. To begin simply send an e-mail request to dave.rowell@noaa.gov or jim.totusek@noaa.gov and you will recieve a return e-mail within a week with account information to access the training system. This course was developed primarily for ESA's, ITO's, and AWIPS Focal Points. This course provides students with Linux/Unix system administration, Informix or basic database experience the opportunity to gain introductory understanding of basic PostgresSQL in an "AWIPS" like environment. The course consists of reading assignments, reading highlights, and hands-on labs and quizzes. The labs will be performed remotely on a NWSTC server with an AWIPS Postgres database. The student will gain an introductory level of understanding of basic PostgreSQL user and administration functions.

The Training Center in response from requests from the field has developed and put into operation a AWIPS OB6 Beta 10 Postgres database server. This innovation will provide those without operational Postgres access an opportunity to experiment with Postgres. There is no training or technical support provided with acccess to this server. Those desireing training in Postgres are directed to Postgres Overview for ESAs, ITOs, and AWIPS Focal Points.
To use the PostgresSQL development server you must be an NWS employee and using your NOAA.gov E-mail account mail a request for a "uu134 Development Server account" to jim.totusek@noaa.gov or dave.rowell@noaa.gov . To access the server you will need an ssh client program such as puTTY. (see puTTY instructions)
