Children attending licensed day care centers and preschools must receive:
Parents were given a grace period to meet the requirements, which were new for the 2008-2009 school year. However, the grace period for flu vaccination ends January 31. Children in licensed day care/preschool who are six- to 59-months-old should have a flu shot by January 14. Or parents may show the day care/preschool an appointment slip with a health care provider to get their child immunized by January 31. Children without a flu shot will be excluded from day care/preschool through March 31 (the duration of the flu season) unless they have a medical or religious exemption. Please Note: Children who turned 60 months of age on or before December 31 are not required to get the flu vaccine, but the Department strongly recommends it. All children in day care/preschool should have received pneumococcal vaccine by now. Parents were given a grace period last fall to meet the requirements, which were new for the 2008-2009 school year. Students who have not been vaccinated and do not have a valid medical or religious exemption will be excluded from school. Transfer Students –Students who transfer into a New Jersey school for sixth grade or a higher grade also must meet the requirements. Medical and Religious Exemptions New Jersey’s immunization regulations provide for medical and religious exemptions. Objections to vaccination that are of a philosophical, moral, secular or of a more general nature are not acceptable.
If you are uninsured and do not have a health care provider, visit the Community Health Centers page to find information on vaccinations and affordable health care. You can also contact your local health department to ask if it holds Child Health Conferences that offer vaccinations.
