Scope and Content Note

The papers of Andres Soriano (Andres Soriano y Roxas, also known in the Philippine Islands as Don Andres Soriano, 1898-1964), span the years 1940-1984, with the bulk of the items concentrated in the period 1942-1964. They consist of correspondence, corporate annual reports, newspaper clippings, photographs, reports, and speeches and proclamations. The Philippine experience during World War II and Soriano's assignment to Douglas MacArthur's staff are the focus of these papers. Included are studies and reports regarding the Japanese psyche and psychological warfare, speeches by MacArthur and Philippine presidents, and Free Philippines (Leyte-Samar Free Philippines), a periodical produced during Japanese occupation in Leyte. Also included is a description by Soriano of the first meeting of MacArthur with Hirohito, emperor of Japan, in 1945.
