Companies call on Congress to pass climate measure; Waxman says he aims to clear a bill by late May

Henry Waxman, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said yesterday he intends to get climate change legislation through the committee “before the Memorial Day recess.”

A coalition of more than 30 corporations, including several major investor-owned electric utilities, released a plan yesterday that calls for cutting U.S. greenhouse emissions by 80% by the year 2050. The coalition, called the U.S. Climate Action Partnership, endorsed a federal cap-and-trade program as the best approach to achieving the emissions cuts.

Once a coal foe, Steven Chu tells Senate panel U.S. must lead effort to use it as ‘cleanly as possible’
Coal will remain a part of the U.S. energy mix, said Steven Chu, President-elect Barack Obama’s nominee for energy secretary, at his confirmation hearing before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee on Tuesday. This was a shift for Chu, who has previously referred to coal as a nightmare. However, the nominee pledged to continue aiming for cleaner and diverse energy sources. Read More
