Kansas City, MO -- Residents of Missouri who suffered damage or loss from the January ice storm have only one week remaining to register for federal disaster assistance programs. The last day to register for federal disaster assistance is Monday, April 8, 2002.
State Coordinating Officer Jerry Uhlmann of the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency and Federal Coordinating Officer Bill Lokey of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) urge those who have not yet registered to do so as soon as possible by calling FEMA's toll-free registration line at 800-621-FEMA (3362). People with hearing or speech impairments may call TTY 1-800-462-7585. Disaster assistance specialists are available to take calls between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. CDT, Monday through Friday.
Homeowners, renters, farmers, agricultural producers, and business owners in designated counties who sustained damage or loss from the ice storm may apply for federal assistance.
Even if you were insured, you are encouraged to apply for disaster assistance. Because insurance claims may take longer to settle than the 60 day FEMA registration period, people who suffered damage or incurred losses from the ice storm should still register during the open application period.
To date, more than 17,870 Missourians have applied for disaster assistance as a result of the January ice storm.
