Benefits
RPCVs accepted to the AmeriCorps program receive a $1,250 per month stipend and an educational award of $4,275 for completing 1,700 hours of service, nine credit hours toward a degree in Community and Regional Planning or Public Administration, and qualify for in-state tuition. These benefits are available only to those who have completed one year of service in the RARE program. Fellows may also choose other graduate programs. Admission to RARE and to other programs are separate processes.
Description
RPCVs are invited to participate in a program called Resource Assistance for Rural Environments (RARE). Qualified applicants live and work in a rural community for one year helping to improve environmental and economic conditions. This program is funded by AmeriCorps, state and federal agencies, and participating rural communities. RPCVs may apply for RARE placement prior to enrollment in a university program, part-way through, or upon completion of a master's program. The RARE program is expected to continue to grow and require skills characteristic of RPCVs.
Requirements
Completed undergraduate degree; good computer and planning and problem-solving skills; demonstrated skill and training in community development, planning or public administration; and a desire to share successful community assistance techniques with other RARE participants and communities. A background in a community development field is also helpful but not required.
