Earthquakes in New Mexico?!

On June 4th a magnitude 3.7 earthquake occurred about near Cebolla, about 70 km north of Los Alamos. The seismic signals overloaded all of the sensors in the Los Alamos Seismic Network (LASN). Did you feel it? Report it on the USGS website. (More)


DOE Submits Yucca Mountain License Application

On June 3, 2008 the Department of Energy submitted a license application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for consideration of Yucca Mountain, Nevada as the site of the nation's first permanent repository for spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste. (More)


Effect of Soot & Air Pollution on Arctic Warming

LANL scientists Manvendra Dubey of EES-6 and Claudio Mazzoleni of ISR-2 deployed the world's first 3-laser photoacoustic instrument soot as an element of Arctic pollution and ice melting. (Details)


Earthquake 'Memory' Could Spur Aftershocks

Using a novel device that simulates earthquakes in a laboratory setting, LANL's Paul Johnson and his colleagues have shown that earthquake waves can induce earthquake aftershocks long after a quake has subsided. (PDF File)
