Scheduled for November 15-21

The New Jersey Department of Education, in conjunction with the Malcolm Bernard Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) College Fair of New Jersey, will sponsor a series of informational events designed to help high school students make choices about college attendance during the week of November 15-21.

More than 40 admissions representatives from the campuses of historically Black institutions of higher education are scheduled to participate. Motivational speakers and various workshops will be available to help students in the college selection and financial aid processes. Students prepared with completed applications and transcripts can receive onsite admission and application fee waivers from many of the colleges and universities.

Youth groups, students and their families are invited to attend these free events. Advance registration is requested for groups of five or more people, and professional dress is recommended.

Last year, more than 8,000 New Jersey students participated. HBCU college fairs will also be held in New York City and Philadelphia during the week.

“DOE is an active participant in and sponsor of the HBCU college fairs every year,” said Education Commissioner Lucille E. Davy. “We want to ensure that students are exposed to a variety options and possibilities as they make their plans for their futures.”

New Jersey HBCU week will start on Sunday, November 16, with a statewide event at the Trenton War Memorial. The event will begin with an ecumenical service in the War Memorial Theater at 10:00 a.m. featuring the Rev. Darrell L. Armstrong, the pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church in Trenton, followed by the college fair from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m.

The other New Jersey college fairs, all of which will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., are:

The New York City event will be held on Saturday, November 15, in Riverbank State Park, 675 Riverside Drive (at 145th Street) in Manhattan from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The Philadelphia event will be held on Friday, November 21, at the School District of Philadelphia, 440 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, from 3:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

Other sponsors of the statewide college fair and ecumenical service at the Trenton War Memorial include the New Jersey Amistad Commission, the Omega Delta Upsilon Foundation, the Delta Upsilon Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development and the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education.

The Trenton event will also recognize and honor the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Malcolm Bernard HBCU College Fair of New Jersey.
