IED Attacks Kill Four Marines; Army Casualty Identified

WASHINGTON, Feb. 7, 2006 – Two attacks with improvised explosive devices killed four Marines in Iraq's Anbar province, Multinational Force Iraq officials said today.

An attack in Hit yesterday killed three Marines assigned to the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable).

The unit has operated in Anbar province since mid-December along with a battalion of Iraqi army soldiers from the 2nd Brigade, 7th Iraqi Army Division. The fourth Marine, assigned to 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), died as a result of wounds from an IED attack while conducting combat operations in Anbar province Feb. 5.

The names of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of family.

The Defense Department also announced yesterday that Spc. William S. Hayes III, 23, of St. Tammany, La., died in Baghdad, on Feb. 5, of a noncombat related injury.

Hayes was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.
