WASHINGTON, Dec. 20, 2006 – A soldier died today and a Marine died Dec. 18 in Iraq, military officials reported.
The soldier, assigned to Multinational Division Baghdad, died when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle south of Baghdad. The Marine, assigned to the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, Special Operations Capable, died Dec. 18 from wounds suffered in combat in Anbar province. Both their identities are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
In other news, the Defense Department released the identities of nine servicemembers killed earlier in Iraq and one killed in Afghanistan.
-- U.S. Marine Capt. Kevin M. Kryst, 27, of West Bend, Wis., died Dec. 18 from wounds received during combat operations in Anbar province. He was assigned to Marine Light-Attack Helicopter Squadron 267, Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.
-- Three soldiers died of wounds received when their vehicle struck an IED while on patrol Dec. 16 in Taji. They were assigned to the 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. They were: Staff Sgt. David R. Staats, 30, of Pueblo, Colo., who died Dec. 16 in Taji; Spc. Matthew J. Stanley, 22, of Wolfeboro Falls, N.H., who died Dec. 16 in Taji; and Pfc. Seth M. Stanton, 19, of Colorado Springs, Colo., who died Dec. 17 in Balad.
-- Army Pfc. Joe L. Baines, 19, of Newark, N.J., died Dec. 16 in Taji of wounds suffered when an IED detonated near his vehicle. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.
-- Marine Lance Cpl. Nicklas J. Palmer, 19, of Leadville, Colo., died Dec. 16 while conducting combat operations in Anbar province. He was assigned to the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.
-- Army Staff Sgt. Henry K. Kahalewai, 43, of Hilo, Hawaii, died Dec. 15 at Brooke Army Medical Center, Texas, of wounds suffered when an IED detonated near his Stryker vehicle. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Wash.
--Two Marines died Dec. 14 due to wounds received from enemy action in Anbar province. Lance Cpl. Matthew W. Clark, 22, of St. Louis, Mo., was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Lance Cpl. Luke C. Yepsen, 20, of Kingwood, Texas, was assigned to the 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, Calif.
Defense officials also identified a soldier killed Dec. 15 in Afghanistan.
Army Staff Sgt. Joseph E. Phaneuf, 38, of Eastford, Conn., died in Mehtar Lam of wounds received when an IED detonated near his vehicle during combat operations. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 102nd Infantry Brigade, Connecticut Army National Guard, Hartford, Conn.
