Printable Maps

Do you need a simple prepared map that you can print at home, at school, or in the office? Look below at our expanding list of maps formatted to be viewed, printed, or downloaded.

Beginning in June, 2000, the National Atlas of the United States published maps illustrating the spread of the West Nile Virus (WNV). In addition to interactive maps, nationalatlas.gov™ offers six page-size maps designed for printing and reproduction. These maps illustrate confirmed and probable-positive WNV test results reported from January 1, 2000 through December 8, 2000.

Printable WNV maps are available for:

• The Surveillance Area - 20 States and two localities (Washington, DC and New York City) along the eastern and southern coasts of the United States.
• Human Cases - WNV infection information for human cases, reported voluntarily by physicians who observed patients with clinical signs of West Nile Virus infection and requested laboratory testing.
• Wild Bird Cases - WNV infection information on dead or diseased crows and other wild birds.
• Mosquito Surveillance - WNV infection information for mosquitoes collected and tested by State and local health agencies.
• Veterinary Cases - WNV infection information for veterinary cases, reported voluntarily by veterinarians who observed symptoms of WNV infection in any animals other than wild birds (such as pets, livestock, and wildlife) and requested laboratory testing.
• Sentinel Flock Surveillance - WNV infection information reported on blood samples from sentinel chicken flocks.

The National Atlas has prepared printable WNV maps only for the year 2000; online information for 2000 through 2003 is available in the National Atlas Map Maker, and more recent information on WNV is available from the U.S. Geological Survey.

The maps are available in the following formats.

• GIF (Graphics Interchange Format)
  These maps are for use on the World Wide Web and can be viewed in your browser window.
  File Sizes: Each map page in GIF format is between 60 - 90KB.

• PDF (Portable Document Format)
  These maps can be printed using your home or office printer. Each map is designed to fit a 8.5- by 11-inch sheet of paper.
  File Sizes: These printable maps have file sizes between 250 - 509KB.
