Military Strength Figures Drop in April

WASHINGTON, June 17, 1998 – Military strength decreased by 5,224 in the month ending April 30 and by 32,790 from April a year ago.

All the services' numbers fell in the April data, the latest available. Army rolls decreased by 1,068, while the Navy went down 2,691. The Air Force lost 825, and the Marine Corps, 640.

As of April 30, the services had 1,403,146 members strong. That total includes full-time military personnel, both regular and reservists on active duty; officer candidates; and cadets at the three military academies. The data do not include Select Reserve members ordered to active duty.
