Provenance:
The papers of Ayn Rand, author and philosopher, were received by the
Library of Congress from Leonard Peikoff in 1991-1992 and 2002. Also in the
collection is a letter given to the Library of Congress by Mrs. Laurie in
1965.
Processing History:
The papers of Ayn Rand were arranged and described in 1995. The register
was revised in 2000 and in 2002.
Copyright Status:
Copyright in the unpublished writings of Ayn Rand in these papers and in
other collections in the custody of the Library of Congress is controlled
by Leonard Peikoff for the estate of Ayn Rand.
Microfilm:
A microfilm edition of the papers in the Manuscript Division is available
on nineteen reels from the Library's Photoduplication Service for purchase
subject to the Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, U.S.C.). This
microfilm edition may also be requested on interlibrary loan through the
Library's Loan Division. No more than ten reels may be requested for each
loan period of one month.

Scope and Content Note
The papers of Ayn Rand (1905-1982) span the years ca. 1933 to 1976, with
the bulk of the material dating from the 1930s to the 1950s. The papers are
largely comprised of manuscripts of her four novels and include drafts,
galleys, and proofs. The first drafts of all four novels are handwritten
and the second drafts are typescripts. The first drafts for three of the
novels bear earlier titles: Anthem was titled Ego, Atlas Shrugged was The
Strike, and We The Living was Airtight.
The small number of items among the remainder of the papers, organized as
"Miscellany," include typescripts, published newsletters, administrative
material from the Ayn Rand Letter, galleys from The Objectivist, and two
photographs.
After their receipt in 2002, originals of the first and last page of the
first draft of The Fountainhead were replaced in the manuscript of this
novel in the collection.
