WASHINGTON, July 13, 2005 – Seventeen enemy combatants were killed and six captured during joint operations today near Deh Chopan in the northern Zabul province, military officials in Afghanistan reported.
The total includes two enemy combatants killed during a small-arms attack July 11. One enemy combatant wounded in that fight was transported to Kandahar Airfield and is in stable condition. Also during the operation Afghan and U.S. forces discovered a small weapons cache hidden inside a mosque. The weapons included one rocket-propelled grenade launcher, 14 rocket-propelled grenades, 14 rocket-propelled grenade boosters and 100 rounds of machine-gun ammunition. Afghan and U.S. forces have been operating around Deh Chopan over the past two days in an effort to prevent enemy influence and to disrupt enemy movements. Elsewhere, an early morning rocket attack today wounded two civilians working at Kandahar Airfield. Kellogg, Brown and Root, a U.S. firm that provides logistical services to U.S. forces stationed abroad, employed both workers. The military said the workers were treated at Kandahar Airfield hospital and later transported to Germany where they are in stable condition. Four rockets were used in the 4 a.m. attack, the military said. U.S. forces immediately launched a search of the area but were unable to locate the attackers.
