NIDCD K08 awards are intended to facilitate the research independence of individuals:

• seeking to integrate both clinical practice and research trajectories in their careers;
• having an aggregate of two or more years of prior research experience;
• holding or having secured positions of junior academic rank, or the equivalent in non-academic employment setting; individuals promoted to the rank of associate professor, or its equivalent, within the last two years may apply.

The NIDCD encourages beginning clinician-scientists to consider applying for one year of support through an NIDCD R03 award (PAR-07-287), if needed, to demonstrate the feasibility of the research to be proposed in their K08 applications.
The NIDCD has the following special requirements for its K08 applicants:

• To facilitate regular face-to-face contact within the mentoring relationship, the primary sponsor of the K08 shall be based at the applicant's home institution or at an institution within a reasonable distance (i.e., approximately 100 miles) of the applicant's institution.
• The career development plan must include a graduate-level didactic course in biostatistics and research design, to be completed during the first year of the award, or provide evidence that such training was previously completed by the applicant.
• An external advisory committee of two scientists with records of Federal research funding and of mentoring new investigators in the field of the proposed research career development, but are not mentors or collaborators of the applicant or the applicant's sponsor, shall be configured.  The purpose of the external advisory committee is to: 1) advise the awardee in attaining the goals of the career development program; and 2) to help ensure that the institution's commitment's to the terms of the award are being met.  These committee members shall commit to be available to the candidate for consultation on an as-needed basis and to site visit the awardee during Years Two and Four of the K08 award.   A report of the external advisory committee shall be incorporated into the Application for Continuation Grant (PHS Form 2590) for Years Three and Five of the award.

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) offers the K08 mechanism to encourage dentists or other clinicians to pursue training for a career in social, behavioral, biomedical, and biological science fields relevant to the NIDCR Strategic Plan.  The prospective candidate must have a D.D.S./D.M.D., M.D. or other clinical doctoral degree.  The award can be used by dentists who wish to pursue a program that includes didactic and supervised basic or behavioral science research experiences that result in the Ph.D. degree.  Health professionals with a doctoral degree may use the award for a postdoctoral experience. The NIDCR will not provide support for clinical specialty training under this program.  Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to a career in oral health research, and funding priority will be given to applicants holding a dental degree.

The NIDDK wishes to promote the training of clinical investigators who, in addition to being excellent physicians, are excellent researchers. The NIDDK supports up to five years of a mentored research experience, as well as related career development activities, in basic, clinical, or behavioral science areas appropriate to the NIDDK. Applicants should have completed all their clinical training and be board eligible by the time the award would begin. MD applicants who have trained in another country and who are not board eligible in the U.S. are not appropriate candidates for NIDDK K08 awards.
Applicants with little or no research experience will require a more structured training program and therefore may want to incorporate courses that will lead to a master's degree into their K08 application. The research proposal from these individuals may incorporate an initial period of didactic coursework and training in laboratory techniques for the first two years of the K08 award, followed by a more laboratory-intensive research period of up to three years.
Applicants with more research experience, such as those holding both the M.D. and Ph.D. degrees, typically will have less need for didactic coursework and should propose a five year research project as well as career development plans that will build upon their past experience and position them for independent funding.
All applicants for K08 awards are encouraged to take advantage of the mentors available to them at their institutions and have, in addition to a primary mentor, one or more co-mentors, as appropriate. The NIDDK will provide up to $90,000 for salary, the appropriate fringe benefits, and up to $25,000 for research support for each of five years for K08 awards.

Research projects proposed in response to this Announcement will be expected to have a defined impact on the environmental health sciences and be directly responsive to the mission of the NIEHS, which is distinguished from that of other Institutes by its focus on research programs seeking to link the effects of environmental exposures to the cause, mechanisms, moderation, or prevention of a human disease or disorder or relevant pathophysiologic process. Examples of environmentally relevant exposures include industrial chemicals or manufacturing byproducts, metals, pesticides, herbicides, air pollutants and other inhaled toxicants, particulates or fibers, fungal, bacterial, or biologically derived toxins. Agents considered non-responsive to this announcement include, but are not limited to: alcohol, chemotherapeutic agents, radiation which is not the result of an ambient environmental exposure, drugs of abuse,  smoking , except when the exposure is the result of second-hand exposure in the context of the indoor environment (particularly in children) and infectious or parasitic agents. Ecologic, biomonitoring, biotransformation or biodegradation studies are also not responsive except when these are incidental to an epidemiologic study.    Preference will be given to candidates whose mentor has NIEHS research grant support.
