Vehicles leased or purchased outside New Jersey

If you purchase or lease a brand new vehicle out-of-state, you need to meet additional requirements to receive a one-time, four-year exempt New Car Dealer Sticker:
  • You must be the first owner of the vehicle
  • The vehicle must be titled and registered at an MVC Agency
  • The completed vehicle registration packet will include a Yellow Card (SS-22A Form) that is valid for 14 days. Place the Yellow Card in the lower left corner of the windshield as temporary authorization to drive the vehicle
  • Take the vehicle to a State-operated Inspection Station within 14 days and receive a one-time, four-year New Car Dealer inspection sticker
  • In-state dealers apply the New Car Dealer sticker directly to the vehicle. In this case a Yellow Card will not be included in the completed registration packet and the vehicle does not need to be taken to the inspection facility
  • Out-of-state dealers cannot issue New Car Dealer stickers or the Yellow Card (SS-22A Form) but they may complete the registration paperwork on behalf of the customer through any MVC Agency
  • New vehicles presented to inspection with obvious failures will be failed and forfeit the one time, four year exemption for a New Car Dealer sticker
