Iraqi Soldiers Seize Weapons, Explosives

American Forces Press Service

BAGHDAD, Iraq, Oct. 14, 2004 – The Iraqi Intervention Force's 1st Battalion arrested six people and seized two vehicles loaded with weapons and explosives Oct. 13 at a traffic control point here.

The vehicles were stopped during routine searches at the impromptu checkpoint in the city.

Included in the seizure was a bus loaded with 17 107 mm artillery shells, 78 mortars, and 108 anti-tank mines. Three people in the vehicle were arrested. The driver had originally tried to bribe the soldiers not to search the bus, officials said.

While the soldiers waited for a Multinational Force explosive-ordnance detachment to handle the seized munitions, a second vehicle was stopped and searched, and the three people in the vehicle were detained for possessing illegal weapons. Included in the second seizure were an AK-47 assault rifle, a pistol, and a magazine vest full of loaded magazines. The suspects were handed over to multinational forces and processed into a detention facility.
