WASHINGTON, May 30, 1997 – Air Force Enlisted Man Named Volunteer of Year TSgt. Frenchie Evans, dormitory facility manager at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, has been named National Volunteer of the Year by the Armed Services YMCA. Each year the Y selects a volunteer who represents the spirit of volunteerism throughout the Armed Services YMCA. A YMCA committee cited Evans for his work with young service members assigned to Alaska. "Frenchie exemplifies the positive impact volunteerism can have on young enlisted men and women," said retired Navy Rear Adm. Frank Gallo, national executive director of the Armed Services YMCA. Officials in the Elmendorf area said Evans is known for his outstanding work with the young men and women assigned to the military community in Alaska. Evans uses the YMCA to create opportunities for the "dorm rats" to get out and enjoy Alaska. He also uses the organization to promote volunteerism. "Volunteerism was not a part of my life before I got involved with the [YMCA]," Evans said. He said the Y told him about a program called "Adopt-a-Lounge," and he was able to get enough airmen to volunteer to staff the lounge at the Anchorage International Airport. His airmen performed more than 400 volunteer hours at the lounge in just one month. "I never knew that volunteering could be so much fun," he said. Tom Morgan, executive director of the Armed Services Y branch in Anchorage, described Evans as "brother, father, counselor, friend and mentor."
