WASHINGTON, July 24, 1997 – DoD Testing Paintless Aircraft As part of the Joint Strike Fighter Program, DoD, the 3M Corp. and Boeing Co., have developed a self-adhesive plastic film that may replace exterior paint on military aircraft. The "paintless" technology represents an environmental breakthrough for the military that could save DoD billions of dollars, said Sherri W. Goodman, deputy under secretary of defense for environmental security. She said the new coating will significantly reduce hazardous materials associated with paints and solvents, cut fuel costs and improve corrosion protection. DoD officials said the Joint Strike Fighter program may save more than $3 billion over the life cycle of the fleet. Goodman and Navy officials on July 17 hosted a public display of the first paintless aircraft, an F/A-18 Hornet fighter being tested at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md. (DoD release) Taegu Gets New Commissary Aug. 26 FORT LEE, Va. -- A new commissary opens at 11 a.m. Aug. 26 at Taegu, Camp Walker, South Korea. The $9 million, state-of-the art facility was made possible by the 5 percent surcharge all commissary shoppers pay at check out, Defense Commissary Agency officials said. The new 52,000-square-foot commissary has 16,000 square feet of sales space -- that's nearly 50 percent larger than the eight-building complex it replaces and triple the sales area. The new store will have wider aisles, and larger produce and frozen food sections than the old store, and it will accept automated teller machine, credit and debit cards.
