Armed Services YMCA Announces 1997 Poster Contest

WASHINGTON, July 1, 1997 – Entry deadline is Sept. 24 for the second annual Armed Services YMCA poster contest for children of military families.

The sponsors, the Armed Services YMCA and GEICO Insurance Co., will award a $500 U.S. Savings Bond to the top entry from each service, including the Coast Guard. The contest theme is "My Military Family." One of the five winners will become the Armed Services YMCA poster, to be distributed worldwide in observance of 1997 Military Family Week, Nov. 23-30.

The contest is open to elementary school age children of military families, including the reserve components. Each entry must include a cover letter with the child's name, age, grade level and address; the parents' full names, military unit and telephone number. Families on permanent change of station orders should include information on the military sponsor's receiving command. Multiple entries are permitted.

Poster designs should be on 8 1/2 X 11 inch white, unlined paper. Color or black-and-white drawings are acceptable.

Submissions must be received by the Sept. 24 deadline. They may be submitted through an Armed Services YMCA branch; any participating installation family center, agency or chapel; or directly to:

A committee of representatives from the Armed Services YMCA National Board and DoD will select the winners. Submissions will not be returned. (From an Armed Services YMCA news release)
