WESTERN SEEKS ADDITIONAL POWER

LAKEWOOD, Colo.— A combined total of up to 200 megawatts of capacity and energy is sought to help offset a lack of hydropower from dams on the Missouri River.

Western Area Power Administration, a Federal agency under the Department of Energy, released a request for proposals Nov. 19 outlining the need for up to 200 MW of purchase power for its Upper Great Plains Region.

“The extended period of drought has severely impacted Western’s ability to produce enough energy to meet its firm commitments,” noted Bob Riehl, Western’s Power Marketing manager for the Upper Great Plains Region. “While Western is making short-term energy purchases to meet its commitments, these types of purchases can be curtailed due to transmission constraints.”

Details of Western’s requirements are posted online at www.wapa.gov/UGP/PowerMarketing/WesternRFP.

Western intends to award one or more Purchase Power Agreements with a contract delivery term of up to five years.  Western is seeking to begin purchasing power during the first quarter of 2008.  However, Western will consider proposals with an alternative delivery start date.  Proposals from both renewable and non-renewable resources will be considered.  Proposals that contain renewable resources will include the associated Renewable Energy Certificates.

A Notice of Intent to submit a proposal is due by Dec. 13 and should be sent to Ms Kathleen Portra, Public Utilities Specialist; Western Area Power Administration; 2900 4th Avenue North, Billings, MT  59101-1266.

Western will hold an Offerors Conference on Dec. 18 at 10 a.m. CST in Sioux Falls, S.D., at the Holiday Inn, 100 West 8th Street.

For more information about these requirements, call or e-mail Ms. Portra at 406-247-7438 or UGPFirmRFP@wapa.gov.
