DANBURY, Conn. -- A special Disaster Legal Services program has been activated as a result of the high winds, heavy rains and flooding from Tropical Storm Floyd.
The program provides free legal assistance to Connecticut residents in the declared counties who cannot afford legal counsel for their disaster-related legal problems. The counties are Hartford, Fairfield and Litchfield.
The services are being provided by volunteer Connecticut attorneys from the Young Lawyers Division of the American Bar Association through an agreement with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
The volunteer attorneys can assist disaster victims with such matters as insurance claims, replacement of wills or other legal papers lost in the disaster, help with home repair contracts and contractors, advice on landlord/tenant and other housing problems and preparation of powers of attorney.
To access the program, disaster victims may call the Connecticut State Bar toll-free referral service hotline at 800-310-7034, ext. 310, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Callers will need to request Disaster Legal Services when they call this number.
