Nashville, TN -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is upgrading its computer system this weekend, a process that will affect people calling the agency's toll-free registration and Helpline number, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), or TDD number, 1-800-462-7585 for the hearing or speech impaired.
Tennesseans who suffered damage during May's tornadoes, severe storms and flooding will still be able to register for assistance during the weekend, but the Helpline option will not be available. Callers who choose the Helpline option will be asked to call back. Residents with emergency needs related to the disaster are encouraged to contact a volunteer organization, such as the American Red Cross (1-866-GET INFO [438-4636]), during the weekend.
The computer system goes off-line today, and is expected to be on-line Tuesday.
FEMA's disaster recover centers will remain open (from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday), as will the ongoing series of FEMA disaster preparedness workshops showing how to protect property from storms and other disasters. Those demonstrations are being held at home improvement stores around the state.
Deadline to register for assistance is the close of business July 7.
