Nashville, TN -- A state of the art mobile disaster coordination vehicle has been deployed to Jackson to help residents who suffered losses in the tornadoes and storms of May. Jackson was one of the hardest-hit communities in the tornado swarm that swept through Tennessee. To date, 1,619 people have visited Jackson recovery centers for assistance, nearly two-thirds of the statewide total of 2,545.

The specially-equipped vehicle will serve as a disaster recovery center at 1325 E. Chester, the east Jackson police command post, and will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday until further notice.

Disaster recovery specialists from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA), and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) are available to explain assistance programs and answer questions.

The newest recovery center began life as a commercial bus, and was obtained as surplus from another federal agency. FEMA personnel equipped the bus with eight work stations, laptop computers, TV, telephones, FAX and copy machines, and a six-seat conference room.

Jackson is also being served by a fixed recovery center at 1668 N. Parkway. Both centers are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

To receive assistance, residents must register with FEMA by calling 1-800 621-3362 (FEMA) between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. seven days a week. A TDD number, 1-800-462-7585, is available for applicants with speech or hearing impairments.
