Remote NetCdf Problems

I downloaded the Unix version (onto a Sun OS platform) of ncBrowse from
http://www.epic.noaa.gov/java/ncBrowse/ , and am having trouble using
the remote netCdf file capability.  I click on File->Web..., which
presents me with a dialog box for remote file access.  This is as far as
I get.  When I select one of the sample URL's from the "Web URL" list
box, the program hangs for a long time (typically, 1/2 hour), then
simply returns to an empty dialog box, in which nothing has changed.
When I type in a full URL in the "Data File URL" text box and click
"Accept", the 1/2 hour delay occurs again, then the dialog box closes.
The main window ("NetCDF File Browser") continues to be displayed with
all of the fields empty or greyed out.   NOTE:  This feels like a
configuration problem.  To install the software, I simply downloaded
the installation executable and ran it.  Do I need to install any
supporting software?   Do I need to make any configuration file changes?
