Thanksgiving Day Message from the Chairman

WASHINGTON, Nov. 24, 1998 – As their first arduous year in the New World came to a close, the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony took a well-deserved respite from their labors to gather and give thanks. Today, Americans everywhere join with family and friends to celebrate in much the same way as our Colonial forebears.

Since that original celebration in the autumn of 1621, the hard work and sacrifice of many generations have brought countless blessings to all Americans. Greatest among these are the liberty and prosperity that make us the envy of the world. From the beginning of our Nation, no group has contributed more to earn and preserve these blessings than the men and women who wear the uniform of America's Armed Forces. Today, you are on duty in every region of the globe, professionally and diligently carrying out your many roles as instruments of peace. Should the fragile peace be disturbed, your countrymen are confident that you will decisively prevail.

This Thanksgiving Day, Americans pause to give thanks for the many blessings that would not be possible without the continuing vigilance of every soldier, sailor, airman, Marine, and Coast Guardsman. Your selfless service is a blessing to us all.

On behalf of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, best wishes for a safe and enjoyable day of thanks.

Gen. Henry H. Shelton, USA Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
