Preparing for Winter Weather Hazards

Winter in New Jersey is a time of unique beauty and unique risks. Wind chill can cause frostbite. Freezing rain can cause dangers on the road. Nor'easters have the potential to cause more damage than hurricanes.

With the right precautions we can weather these storms together. The following pages provide essential facts on winter preparedness:

Remember:

  • The basics of preparedness for virtually all hazards are the same. Create your Emergency Kit and Emergency Action Plan, and know which radio or TV stations you will listen to for emergency watches, warnings and instructions. Go to the NJOEM Basic Preparedness page for details.
  • For New Jersey winter weather updates check the NWS Philadelphia / Mount Holly website and the NWS New York City / Upton site
  • Listen for emergency information and official instructions on your local radio and TV stations. A battery-powered radio is a vital part of your Emergency Kit.
