WASHINGTON, Sept. 13, 2004 – A joint patrol Iraqi National Guard and multinational forces soldiers from Multinational Division Central South 1st Brigade Combat Team was attacked with improvised explosive devices during mid- morning operations today.
The attacks, consisting of one IED on the road and one vehicle-born, were on the road to Al Maseru, northeast of Al Zillah City. Three ING soldiers were killed, three were wounded, and one is reported missing in action. Helicopters evacuated the wounded soldiers to area hospitals. Quick-reaction forces responded and an investigation is under way. For the second consecutive night, insurgents attacked Camp Zulu in Wasit province with mortars. Four rockets landed near the camp boundaries today. In the Sept. 12 attack, several explosions were reported in the vicinity of the camp. One round exploded inside the camp and caused minor damage. Multinational forces returned small-arms fire, causing the insurgents to withdraw. Also Sept. 12, the Polish explosive ordnance disposal team, along with the security escort from the 1st Battle Group Multinational Division Central South, came under attack from anti-Iraqi forces using rocket-propelled grenades and small arms. During the attack three Polish soldiers were killed and three were wounded. The wounded soldiers are in stable condition at a military hospital in Kabala. Later that day, near As-Sine Village, a 2nd Brigade Combat Team patrol encountered an improvised explosive device while on patrol.
