Eligibility for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid
Restored
to Many Elderly Immigrants
On October 28, the President signed H.R. 4558, restoring
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid eligibility
to an estimated 12,000 elderly and disabled immigrants whom
the Social Security Administration (SSA) coded as "not
qualified." The majority of these indigent immigrants
are over 70 years of age and have lived in the U.S. for more
than 25 years. In the absence of legislative relief, these
immigrants would have lost eligibility for income and medical
care on September 30, 1998.
This law will restore SSI eligibility to the balance of all
immigrants who were receiving assistance when the welfare reform
law was enacted on August 22, 1996.
