WASHINGTON, Jan. 14, 2004 – Soldiers have captured four relatives believed to have harbored Izzit Ibrahim al-Douri, the most wanted fugitive in Iraq, Combined Joint Task Force 7 announced today.
An Iraqi citizen provided information that brought 720th Military Police Battalion soldiers to a location in Samara in the early morning hours today, a task force news release reported. The information proved correct, and the soldiers captured three nephews of Saddam Hussein's former vice president without incident. Another nephew was captured nearby, based on information gathered from the initial capture location. The four men are suspected of providing hiding places and transportation for their uncle, who is believed to be a key leader in coordinating attacks against coalition forces and Iraqi citizens. The Coalition Provisional Authority has a $10 million bounty on his head. Originally No. 6 on the list of Iraq's 55 most- wanted fugitives, al-Douri is the highest-ranking member of that list who has yet to be captured or killed. The four men remain detained for further questioning, the news release said.
