AUSTIN, Texas -- On September 19, 2008, just days after Texas received a federal disaster declaration for massive destruction caused by Hurricane Ike; the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) opened its first Disaster Recovery Center to provide face-to-face disaster assistance to homeowners, renters and business owners who suffered losses and damage from the storm. After more than fifty days, the opening of more than a hundred centers and tens of thousands of visits, a total of 31 centers remain open serving 12 hard-hit counties.

Texans are reminded that they can continue to visit any recovery center that is still open. A complete list of open centers is available at www.txdps.state.tx.us/dem/pages/dr1791_drc_list.htm. Register with FEMA online at www.fema.gov or call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), TTY 1-800-462-7585. Both numbers are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The deadline to register is Dec. 12.
