WASHINGTON, Feb. 20, 2003 – A U.S. soldier lost his foot Feb. 19 in a mine strike in eastern Afghanistan.

A U.S. military spokesman in Kabul, Afghanistan, said this morning that the soldier was on a routine mounted patrol near Gardez when the vehicle he was in struck a mine. The blast took the soldier's right foot, the spokesman said.

The wounded man underwent emergency surgery at the U.S. forward operating base in Khowst. He was then transferred to the U.S. military hospital in Bagram, where he was listed in stable condition. He was flown today to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany.

Another soldier received unspecified injuries to his face. He was treated at Khowst and released to his unit, the spokesman said.

Officials have not released the soldiers' names or units to protect their privacy.
