Under provisions of the President's Emergency Declaration for the severe weather that struck Arkansas earlier this month, mobile homes are being transferred to the state from storage sites in Texas and North Dakota. The temporary emergency housing will be placed at the now closed Eaker Air Force Base near Blytheville in Mississippi County.
The housing is being provided to victims of severe weather that produced tornadoes and flooding across northern Arkansas on April 16. Relocating victims out of the Manila, AR, the hardest hit area, was deemed undesirable because of the negative impact it would have on employment, schools and community life.
The housing units are set to arrive in Arkansas at the end of this week. State officials will handle site preparation, installations, maintenance and operation of the units. Once the housing units are delivered, FEMA will provide technical assistance, if required.
FEMA's Federal Coordinating Officer (FCO) and disaster recovery staff are setting up a base of operations to process these housing units at the former Air Force base.
