12th ANNUAL SCIENCE BOWL COMING TO HURON

HURON, S.D.—Jan. 22 marks the 12th Annual South Dakota Regional Science Bowl, giving high school students a chance to show their mathematical and scientific knowledge.

Western Area Power Administration sponsors this competition as part of the Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl program. Competition starts at 9 a.m. at SiTanka University at Huron in Voorhees Hall. In the afternoon, the top eight teams compete in a double elimination final round.

Other sponsors include: SiTanka – Huron University, NorthWestern Energy, Toshiba and Touchstone Energy.

During the science bowl, students will match wits in astronomy, biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, earth and general science. Teams are comprised of five students and a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach. The winning high school team gets an all-expense paid trip to represent South Dakota at the National Science Bowl in April at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, Md.

“This year, we have 32 teams from 24 schools across the state,” said Jeri Patient, South Dakota Science Bowl media coordinator. “This is a great opportunity to show our commitment to young people throughout our community.”
