Using United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Photographs
Obtaining Images from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum
Most images used in U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum exhibitions and on its Web site are copyright protected. Permission must be obtained from the copyright holder prior to use. However, the Museum offers some public domain and Museum-owned images online.
Museum Exhibition Images
Images are comprised of those contained in any of the Museum’s traveling exhibitions.
- Visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s website http://www.ushmm.org/.
- On the left hand column “Inside the Museum” select “Press Room.”
- Select the “Press Kits” option.
- Select the Press Kit you wish to view. Several high resolution images for print or web usage along with captions and credits are available by clicking on these images.
Historical Images
If the image you are searching for is not from a Museum exhibition it may be accessible through the Museum’s Photo Archives online catalog.
- Visit www.ushmm.org/research/collections/photo/.
- Select “Search Online Catalog.”

To search the Photo Archives online catalog:
- Select “historical” as the photograph type.
- Enter a keyword, phrase, personal name, or geographic location into the box marked “Search Photos.”
- Click on “Search.”
- E-mail the photograph’s corresponding reference number to photoarchives@ushmm.org. There is an administrative fee of $17 per image fee for each high-resolution image sent via e-mail. Payment should be arranged through the Photo Archives department.
Institutional Images
These images include those of the museum and its programs. They are accessible through the Museum’s Photo Archives online catalog.

- Select “Search Online Catalog.”
