American Eagle Platinum Uncirculated Coins are struck on specially burnished blanks. These coins offer precious metal purchasers a new collectible version of the popular American Eagle Platinum Coins. The coins have a finish similar to their bullion coin counterparts and are available in four sizes – one ounce, one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce, and one-tenth ounce, as well as a four-coin set which contains one coin in each denomination. Each coin bears the “W” mint mark reflecting its striking at the United States Mint at West Point.

In 2006, the United States Mint embarked on a new, three-year series titled The Foundations of American Democracy. Each year, beginning in 2006, the reverse design has featured an image emblematic of one of the three institutional foundations of our American democracy – the Legislative, the Executive and the Judicial branches. This new series of designs was introduced in the order the branches of government appear in the U.S. Constitution.

In 2008, the reverse features the third design in the series – representing the Judicial Branch. The design features Lady Justice, a classic symbol dating back to Greek and Roman times. In her right hand, the scales are suspended from one finger, representing the delicate balance of the law. In the other hand she holds the sword, signifying the power that is held by those making the decision. The bald eagle, our Nation’s symbol of power, courage and freedom, is featured watching over our firm foundation of democracy. The 2008 reverse design was created by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Joel Iskowitz and engraved by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Charles Vickers.
