Peach State Churns Out Peace Corps Volunteers
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Atlanta, Ga.
August 4, 2008
This article featured in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution by S.A. Reid, describes how applications to join the Peace Corps in the Southeastern part of the U.S., which includes Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, are currently up 34 percent.
A 66-year-old DeKalb resident, Carole Kallansrude, talks about her experience in applying to teach English overseas for the Peace Corps in the South Pacific.
The article also says that Peace Corps officials attribute the jump to higher interest in social responsibility and making a difference in the world, especially among young people. The tight job market and efforts to recruit volunteers 50 and over, the organization said, also play a role.
Globalization, immigration, travel by the 50-plus crowd, study abroad-academic opportunities, international affairs degrees and the experiences of returned Peace Corps volunteers have combined to encourage more in Georgia and the rest of the region to offer their time and talents.
