This article tells the story of Theo Yakah, a graduate student from Ghana who is currently in the masters program of the communication department of Wake Forest University. Yakah came to the U.S. in 2006 when he received a full scholarship from the university.

His motivation came from the encouragement of a friendly Peace Corps Volunteer named Nate Dunn. The two met because Dunn needed a translator in Ghana to carry out HIV and AIDS education, and Yakah volunteered. The two became friends, and through encouragement from Dunn, Yakah was able to pursue advanced degrees in Ghana and later at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem.
