Thanksgiving Message from the Assistant Secretary for Aging

As we gather with family and friends at Thanksgiving, we reflect on the many blessings that have been bestowed upon us throughout the year and give thanks to those who provide love, guidance and meaning in our lives. The Administration on Aging would like to take this opportunity to express appreciation for those who support our families and friends throughout the year – our national network of state and area agencies on aging, tribal organizations, community service providers, paid and informal caregivers, volunteers, and friends - all of whom work alongside our older loved ones to ensure their dignity and well being. May their spirit of selflessness and dedication continue to inspire us throughout the year.

President Bush has issued a Thanksgiving Day Proclamation.

Veterans Day Message from Assistant Secretary for Aging Josefina G. Carbonell

Honoring All Who Serve

On November 11, 2008 the Administration on Aging joins President George W. Bush in honoring our nation’s veterans.

As we pause on Veterans Day to reflect on the sacrifices made by past and current veterans, we share a deep sense of pride and gratitude for the contributions they continue to make to preserve the freedoms that we hold dear. We also honor our nation’s unwavering commitment to ensure that the health and well being of veterans remains a national priority. The Administration on Aging is proud to have recently joined the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in a first-ever collaboration designed to offer more services, choices and control over decisions to veterans and their families as they explore health and long term care options. This opportunity will enable veterans of any age and older persons to choose to remain at home among their family and friends for as long as possible. Our goal is to give veterans and older Americans additional tools they can use to integrate long term care services into their health care plans in order to avoid costly nursing home placement and spend down to Medicaid.  This is the preference for most Americans, and we are proud to live in a country where this is not only a possibility, but a reality.

We urge all Americans to take the opportunity this Veterans Day to thank a veteran for their service, and to honor the memory of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

President Bush has recently issued the following proclamations for the month of November

National American Indian Heritage Month, 2008

During National American Indian Heritage Month, we celebrate the rich ancestry of American Indians and Alaska Natives and recognize their many contributions to our national story. Native Americans have enriched our heritage and added to all aspects of our society.
