January 2009

Can you believe it's already 2009?  During the past month, new information and activities have been added to the United States Mint H.I.P. Pocket Change Web site.  To help you learn "What's New for You," we've listed and linked these features below.

January Coin of the Month—Join Flip and learn more about the District of Columbia and Duke Ellington.  The District of Columbia quarter is the first quarter of the 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Program.

District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Program Lesson Plans—Take a look at these lessons, created specifically to celebrate the District of Columbia quarter:  "Musician Extraordinaire" (K and 1), "Let's Do a Biography" (2 and 3), and "Music to My Ears" (4–6). After that, check out the rest of the territory-specific plans that are FREE to download, and are available in sets designed specifically for grades K and 1, 2 and 3, and 4 through 6.

The Coins Are Coming—Be among the first to see the 2009 coins and related classroom activities.  New for 2009 are lesson plans built around the Native American $1 Coin Program, the District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Program, and the 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial One Cent Program.

Painter's Studio—Have students color the unique designs featured on the new District of Columbia and U.S. Territories quarters while learning about the national capital and the U.S. territories.  Teachers: visit our Games and Skills page to find information about this game's grade-level appropriateness, skills used, and related classroom activities.

Making Cents—The latest issue of this "quarterly" e-newsletter has arrived to welcome in your new year!  This issue celebrates the first quarter (District of Columbia) in the 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Program, unveils a new game, and features a brand new crossword puzzle based on the newsletter's contents.  To receive announcements about Making Cents, new lesson plans, and special projects, join the Teacher's Network.  Subscribing is fast and easy!
