Surveillance of Congenital Heart Defects & Associated Syndromes (Web on Demand)
Course Number: WD1278
This activity focusing on congenital heart defects (CHDs) will have 2 talks: “Syndromes Associated with Congenital Heart Defects”, presented by Dr. Angela Lin, and “Heart of Surveillance: Tips on Coding Congenital Heart Defects,” presented by Dr. Tiffany Colarusso. Dr. Lin discusses syndromes with CHDs categorized by genetic etiology: chromosomal abnormalities, Mendelian gene disorders, known teratogens, and conditions with presumed but unproven genetic causation. Each syndrome is reviewed in terms of genetic basis, clinical findings, and associated distinctive or general CHDs. The emphasis is on scope rather than in-depth discussion. Dr. Colarusso briefly describes CHDs in each of the major CHD groups, including laterality, single ventricle, looping, conotruncal, atrioventricular canal, right & left heart outflow obstruction, atrial & ventricular septal defects, & anomalous pulmonary venous return. For each CHD, options for detailed or streamlined coding based on schemas used in birth defects registries are discussed.
