Tupelo, MS -- Advisors from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation team will be touring local sites during the next week to demonstrate the effectiveness and affordability of safe rooms to protect against injury during tornadoes and windstorms.
Safe rooms are reinforced enclosures, inside or outside the home, easily accessible to family members, and stocked for emergency situations. If inside the home, it may be a bathroom or closet which has been specially constructed or retrofitted for the purpose. According to Sylvia Farrington, deputy federal coordinating officer for mitigation, "They are viable and affordable."
The publication, Taking Shelter from the Storm, which contains construction plans for safe rooms, may be picked up at any of the following sites on the scheduled dates:
Charleston City Hall in Tallahatchie County, Wednesday, Apr. 4th, 10:l5 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
West Tallahatchie School District Superintendent's Office, Thursday and Friday, Apr. 5th and 6th, 9:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.
Old Coahoma County Jail, 71 Sunflower, Clarksdale, Monday, Apr. 9th, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The display is also scheduled for the Lowe's store in Hattiesburg on Apr. 10th and 11th at hours still to be announced.
