CHAPARRAL
HIGH SCHOOL
OF SCOTTSDALE WINS THE 12TH ANNUAL SCIENCE BOWL

PHOENIX—Chaparral High School of Scottsdale won the 12th annual Arizona Regional Science Bowl, March 6, at Glendale Community College.

The competition featured teams from 16 schools competing for top regional honors at this academic competition among teams of high school students. Chaparral will represent Arizona in an all-expense paid trip to the Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl, April 29 to May 3 in Washington, D.C.

The Science Bowl program is designed to encourage students and their teachers to achieve educational excellence in the sciences. Competing teams answer questions on scientific topics in biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, earth science, computer science, and mathematics. Since the program began in 1991, it has brought together more than 60,000 high school mathematics and science students—as well as their teachers—from across the country.

Supported by sponsoring businesses and agencies, the regional competition brings together the best and brightest math and science students from across the state for a day of fun-filled competition, explained Arizona Regional Science Bowl Coordinator Dennis Schaefer. “It just keeps getting better. This year we had four new schools participating and several new corporate sponsors,” he said.

Congressman Ed Pastor of Arizona’s Fourth Congressional District welcomed the students to the event. After speaking to the students and coaches, he said, “If time permits [when the students attend the National Science Bowl], a Capitol tour and lunch are on me.”

Western Area Power Administration hosts and sponsors the Arizona Regional Science Bowl each year. Other sponsors include the Arizona Municipal Power User’s Association, K.R. Saline, Greater Phoenix Mensa, Café Valley Bakery, Safeway, University of Phoenix—Apollo Group, Salt River Project, Irrigation & Electrical Districts Association of Arizona, Basha’s, Lockheed Martin, Linens-N-Things, the Arizona Diamondbacks and Rattlers, Earnhardt Motors, Prentice Hall Publishing, Bill-Mar Specialty Co., DuraSign, Kritmark, Amazing Awards and Glendale Community College .

Western annually markets and transmits more than 10,000 megawatts of power from hydroelectric powerplants owned and operated by the Bureau of Reclamation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 15 western and central states. Western is one of four U.S. Department of Energy power marketing administrations. It hosts regional Science Bowl competitions in Arizona, California, Colorado Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.
