A Look Back ... John Ford: War Movies
During World War II, many celebrities contributed to the war
effort. A select few used their talents clandestinely in organizations
such as the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the predecessor of the Central
Intelligence Agency (CIA). Film director John Ford was one such Hollywood
treasure who aided the OSS
during World War II. He used his eye for cinematography and skill in filmmaking
to create documentaries about the war and OSS
activities in the field. Ford pioneered the use of film during wartime, and his
efforts with the OSS
led to the establishment of the OSS Intelligence Photographic Documentation
