  • Aftermath of the San Francisco Earthquake, 1906
    120 photographs and documents of the Aftermath of the San Francisco Earthquake, 1906 have been digitized about the San Francisco Earthquake and fire. These include photographs taken by several photographers. Subjects include earthquake and fire damage in San Francisco on streets including Van Ness, Fillmore, and California; ruins of churches, hospitals, schools, museums, Stanford University, the City Hall, and the Opera House; destruction on Nob Hill and in Chinatown; temporary homes and relief operations at Golden Gate Park and Ft. Mason; bread lines, street kitchens, field hospitals, and the office of the Relief Commission; earthquake displacement outside the city; and Major C.A. Devol, of the U.S. Army Quartermaster Department, who supervised distribution of food supplies to refugees. These materials are held by NARA's Still Picture Records (College Park, MD).

    An additional 48 multi-page documents and 14 photographs relating to the San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906 have been digitized. Included are correspondence, memoranda, and reports which record federal emergency response by the Army's Presidio of San Francisco. Also included are the report and related correspondence concerning Lieutenant Frederick N. Freeman, commander of the USTBD Perry, and his unit's activities during the earthquake and fire. The photographs are from the Mare Island Shipyard Historian which was a federal position until closure of the shipyard. However, the Historian continued adding to the collection in a "volunteer" capacity until 1997. These materials are held by NARA's Pacific Region (San Francisco, CA).

    1. Go to http://www.archives.gov/research/arc/.
    2. Press the Yellow search button to go to the Archival Descriptions Search screen.
    3. To search only for archival descriptions that have digital copies, click the Digital Copies search button at the top of the ARC pages.
    4. Enter San Francisco Earthquake in the Keywords box.
    5. Select the limit results radio button for 1000.
    6. Press the Go button.
    7. When hits are returned for your search, view the full result of your hit by selecting the Title link.
