The smoking-related diseases included in the Adult and the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) SAMMEC application are categorized using the tenth revision of the International Classification of Disease (ICD) coding system. ICD codes are necessary for collecting mortality data and matching the appropriate relative risk of death estimates in the smoking-attributable mortality calculations. The disease-specific ICD codes are listed in the table below.
Beginning in 1999, mortality data are categorized using ICD-10 codes. Since previous SAMMEC estimates (1979–1998) used ICD-9 codes, the corresponding codes are included in the table below. Death counts using ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes are not directly comparable. If users plan to compare estimates after 1999 to prior data, the mortality data must be adjusted using the appropriate comparability ratio, published by the National Center for Health Statistics. |
