NCPTT held the Southeast Cemetery Monument Conservation Workshop at St. Michaels Cemetery, Pensacola, Florida on October 23-25, 2007. Twenty five participants from twelve states and England attended the three day hands-on workshop geared to cemetery maintenance and management staff, monument builders, and preservation professionals. Ten expert instructors from around the country led the workshop in a small group round-robin format. The topics covered included condition assessments, conservation ethics, cleaning and consolidation techniques, adhesive repairs, patch and loss filling, and resetting.
This year’s special topic was the location of buried features and unmarked graves. Hands-on sessions were offered on the use of Ground Penetrating Radar, magnetometer, resistivity, and conductivity.
At the end of the three days participants of the workshop left St. Michael’s Cemetery with further knowledge of cemetery conservation to take back to their home areas. The participants left behind ten newly conserved graves at St. Michaels.
